TekTip: Guidelines for Intercom Amplifier Placement

Many TekTone® intercoms require the use of centrally located amplifiers. These should be located according to instructions, but some individual installations may require amplifier relocation. The following guidelines may be helpful.

The amplifier should generally be located near the center of system wiring; away from heat, cold, and moisture; at least 3 feet away from transformers or electrical devices; and in an accessible location. Specific requirements for certain systems follow.

Residential Systems: Follow the general guidelines. If the door station wiring is to be run near the indoor station wiring, 2-conductor shielded cable should be used for the door station wires.

Office Systems: Follow the general guidelines. For paging amplifiers, such as the PK507A, be certain to keep the speaker wiring well separated from the telephone wiring.

Apartment Systems: Apartment intercom amplifiers, such as TekTone®'s model PK543 and PK205, are typically installed inside the entrance panel housing in a position that will not interfere with panel mounted equipment. If it is necessary to install these intercom amplifiers elsewhere, a 2-conductor shielded cable must be used for entrance panel speaker/microphone wiring. (The shield is connected to amplifier terminal G.)
