TekTip: When to use shielded wire
All TekTone® intercoms are made to be used without shielded wire under normal circumstances. However, there are times when the use of shielded wire may be necessary.
There are three problems that may require the use of shielded wire. They are:
- Hum or noise pickup.
- Radio interference.
- Audio interference (cross talk).
Hum or noise pickup may occur because of running intercom cables too close to electrical devices or power wires. In some cases, intercom wires have been run in the same conduit as power wiring, or even through light fixtures. This problem is best avoided by not running wires in this fashion, but shielded wire may be used if necessary.
Radio interference may occur because of proximity to a powerful radio transmitter. This problem may be corrected by adding filters to the equipment; but, in extreme cases, shielded wire may be needed.
Audio interference may occur because of running wires too close to cables used for paging systems, background music or similar services. At times, it may be that input and output wires of the same intercom are too close to each other. (For example, entrance speaker wiring run together with suite station wiring.) Shielded wiring may be used to eliminate such problems.
